Medicare Open Enrollment 2026: What Schuylkill County Residents Can Review Before December 7

SCHUYLKILL COUNTY, Pa. — October 28, 2026. Medicare beneficiaries are in the middle of the annual window for reviewing health and prescription coverage. The federal Medicare program says Open Enrollment runs October 15 through December 7, with changes generally taking effect January 1 of the following year. For residents of Pottsville, Tamaqua, Shenandoah and smaller communities across Schuylkill County, the practical question is whether the coverage you have now will still fit your needs in 2027.

What can you change during this window?

Depending on your current coverage, Medicare says you can switch Medicare Advantage plans, join or change a Medicare drug plan, move between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage, or drop certain coverage. The options and consequences depend on the starting plan. This period isn’t the same as a first-time Medicare enrollment window or a guaranteed opportunity to buy any supplemental insurance policy.

Look beyond the monthly premium

A low monthly premium can be appealing, but it isn’t the whole cost of care. Review deductibles, copays, coinsurance, out-of-pocket limits, prescription tiers and preferred pharmacies. Someone taking several medications should verify the exact drugs, dosages and pharmacies, not just the plan’s headline price. The cheapest premium may not mean the cheapest year.

Likewise, people who travel between Pennsylvania and Florida or receive specialty care should carefully review provider networks and rules for receiving services outside their home area. The same insurer’s plan may differ by county and year, so an old brochure or a friend’s recommendation may not be reliable for your address.

Four things to gather before you compare

Have your current plan information, a list of prescription medications, the names of clinicians and facilities you use, and an estimate of the care you expect to need. Consider dental, vision or hearing benefits only after confirming the limits and conditions. Read any Annual Notice of Change sent by your current plan so you know what may change in January.

Avoid misleading enrollment calls

Be cautious if someone pressures you to act immediately, asks for sensitive identifying information during an unexpected call, or promises benefits without explaining eligibility. Independently confirm the company and plan. The official plan comparison tools are at Medicare.gov. For individualized guidance, use an authorized counselor or licensed insurance professional; SkookPA does not recommend a particular plan.

Mark December 7 on the calendar

Medicare states that a change request must be received by the December 7 deadline. Don’t wait until the final evening if you need to contact a plan, confirm a provider or straighten out a medication list. If you decide to keep the same plan, still check its annual changes. Coverage that fit last year can become less suitable even without a major change in your health.
