SCHUYLKILL COUNTY, Pa. — October 28, 2026. If the mornings have felt darker, one of autumn’s biggest calendar changes is almost here. In Pennsylvania, daylight saving time ends Sunday, November 1, 2026, at 2 a.m. Clocks move backward one hour, from 2 a.m. to 1 a.m. Most connected phones adjust automatically, but household clocks, car dashboards and appliances may need attention.
Exactly when do clocks change?
The National Institute of Standards and Technology identifies November 1 as the end of daylight saving time in 2026. The change happens at 2 a.m. local time. That hour from 1 a.m. to 2 a.m. occurs twice. For most people, the easiest approach is to set manual clocks back before going to bed Saturday, October 31.
After the switch, sunrise and sunset occur roughly an hour earlier on the clock. People heading to work, school, practice or a hunting area should be ready for earlier evening darkness, even though the number of daylight hours isn’t increased or decreased by moving the clock.
Check devices and time-sensitive schedules
Smartphones, computers and many smart-home systems handle the change without intervention when their time-zone settings are correct. Older microwave ovens, range clocks, wall clocks, vehicle dashboards and mechanical timers often do not. If you use a programmable thermostat or timed exterior light, confirm the schedule still makes sense Sunday morning.
Shift workers and anyone catching early-morning transportation should pay particular attention to the repeated 1 a.m. hour. A scheduled appointment around the change could be confusing unless its local time and time zone are specified. Likewise, medication or device schedules that require precise intervals deserve a check against their actual elapsed time, not simply the clock face.
A useful reminder for safety at home
The time change is an easy date to check smoke-alarm and carbon-monoxide-alarm status, review manufacturer replacement dates and test alarms according to instructions. Not every unit uses replaceable batteries: sealed-battery models have their own service life. Don’t remove or disable an alarm because it chirps without investigating its age and the manufacturer’s directions.
Autumn is also the moment to clear leaves from outdoor drains where safe, make sure walkways are visible after dark and verify that porch lighting works. In hilly coal-region communities, a few minutes of extra preparation can make early-evening travel and home entry more comfortable.
When does daylight saving time return?
Under the current national rule, daylight saving time starts the second Sunday in March. The exact dates are maintained by the federal time standards agency; Pennsylvania currently follows those rules. For 2026, the next change is this Sunday’s November 1 fall-back. Plan for the earlier sunsets and enjoy the extra hour on the clock.
