Route 61 Frackville Grade Closure Planned November 1–2: Detour and Traffic Shift

ST. CLAIR / FRACKVILLE, Pa. — Drivers who use Route 61 between St. Clair and Interstate 81 should plan for a temporary closure while crews move traffic onto a rebuilt part of the highway. PennDOT’s October 22 notice lists a closure beginning November 1, 2026, at 3 a.m. and ending November 2 at 5 a.m.

Which part of Route 61 is affected?

The scheduled restriction covers Route 61 between Terry Rich Boulevard and Interstate 81, in the St. Clair Borough and West Mahanoy Township area. PennDOT describes it as a continuous closure rather than a brief lane restriction. Motorists should not expect to drive straight through the work zone during those hours.

What is the detour?

According to PennDOT, the posted detour will use US 209, Route 901 and Interstate 81. Drivers should follow the temporary traffic-control signs and account for additional travel time. Businesses and residents near the closure should check the latest agency notice before making time-sensitive trips.

Why the closure is needed

The closure is part of the long-running Route 61 reconstruction project. The immediate task is to shift traffic to the newly built southbound portion of the highway. The broader project includes pavement reconstruction, curve realignment, wider shoulders and other improvements intended to address problems along the corridor.

A date discrepancy in PennDOT’s notice

PennDOT’s announcement describes the opening day as “Saturday, November 1,” but November 1, 2026 falls on a Sunday. The agency’s numbered start date is November 1. Because the weekday in the notice does not match the calendar, SkookPA recommends checking PennDOT’s latest notice or 511PA before setting out. This report follows the posted date and does not assume the weekday wording is correct.

What travelers should know

  • Route: PA 61 between Terry Rich Boulevard and I-81
  • Listed start: November 1 at 3 a.m.
  • Listed end: November 2 at 5 a.m.
  • Detour: US 209, PA 901 and I-81
  • Purpose: Move traffic onto the newly built southbound side

Closures and work-zone traffic patterns can change. The most reliable final check is an up-to-date agency announcement.
