Minersville: Coal-Town History and a Modern Gateway to Off-Road Recreation

by | Oct 4, 2026 | Coal Region History, Outdoors, Towns & Places | 0 comments

The name says exactly where Minersville came from.

The borough’s development was tied to mining and the growth of the anthracite industry, and its compact streets still reflect the shape of a traditional Coal Region community.

Close to Pottsville, but its own identity

Minersville sits just west of Pottsville but has long maintained its own schools, businesses, neighborhoods and community traditions.

A new kind of coal-land economy

Today, nearby off-road recreation has added a different use for the region’s rugged terrain. Famous Reading Outdoors includes access points and riding areas around the broader Minersville area.

Old industry, new recreation

That transition is a good example of what is happening across Schuylkill County: former industrial land and coal roads are becoming part of an outdoor tourism economy.
