Schuylkill County Prison and the Molly Maguire Executions in Pottsville

by | Oct 4, 2026 | Coal Region History, Pottsville, Towns & Places | 0 comments

The old Schuylkill County Prison in Pottsville is impossible to separate from one of the most controversial chapters in Coal Region history.

The June 21, 1877 executions

Six men identified as leaders of the Molly Maguires were executed at the prison on June 21, 1877. Four other men were executed the same day in Mauch Chunk, now Jim Thorpe.

Why the site still matters

The Molly Maguire trials and executions remain debated because they combined real violence, dangerous labor conditions, private corporate power, ethnic tension and questions about fairness in the justice system.

A physical link to the story

Historical events can feel distant until there is a building attached to them. The prison remains one of those places where Coal Region history is still physically present in downtown Pottsville.
