The first cold snap can catch even experienced Schuylkill County drivers off guard. Between valley fog, steep grades, changing temperatures and construction zones, a trip that begins on dry pavement can end on a slippery hill. A few minutes of preparation is worth far more than trying to fix a problem on the shoulder.

Use current information, not yesterday’s screenshot
Check 511PA for PennDOT restrictions and traveler alerts and the National Weather Service for forecast hazards. A road that was closed for a planned construction window may already have reopened; a new crash or freezing rain can create a separate restriction minutes later.
Before the first freezing night
- Inspect tire tread and confirm pressures when tires are cold.
- Check washer fluid rated for freezing temperatures and replace streaking wiper blades.
- Test the battery if starts have become slow.
- Keep enough fuel or charge for an unexpected delay.
- Clear snow from lights, windows, mirrors and the roof before driving.
What belongs in a small roadside kit?
Think warmth, visibility, communication and simple protection: a flashlight with working batteries, reflective warning device, warm blanket, gloves, water, a phone charging cable, small first-aid kit and a scraper. If you often travel remote roads, consider traction aids appropriate to your vehicle and conditions. Keep loose items secured so they cannot become projectiles during a stop.
Driving grades and winding roads
Leave extra following distance, slow before a curve rather than braking hard mid-turn, and avoid abrupt steering. Never stop on a blind hillcrest to take a road-closure photograph. If a road is marked closed, do not follow a GPS shortcut through barricades.
When to postpone the trip
If freezing rain is forecast, visibility is near zero, or officials advise against travel, consider waiting. No appointment is worth a preventable crash. If stranded, follow official emergency guidance and call for help rather than wandering into traffic.
