Yuengling in Pottsville: How America’s Oldest Brewery Became Part of Schuylkill County

There are a few names that instantly say “Schuylkill County.” Yuengling is one of them.

D.G. Yuengling & Son traces its history to 1829, when David G. Yuengling founded the Eagle Brewery in Pottsville. Nearly two centuries later, the historic brewery on Mahantongo Street remains one of the county’s most recognizable landmarks.

A brewery built in a coal town

Yuengling’s own history describes Pottsville in the early 1800s as a growing coal-mining town. That timing mattered. Anthracite mining was expanding, workers and immigrants were arriving, and communities throughout Schuylkill County were growing around the coal industry.

David Gottlieb Jüngling had emigrated from Germany and changed the spelling of his family name to Yuengling. He founded the Eagle Brewery in Pottsville in 1829.

The Mahantongo Street brewery

After a fire destroyed the original brewery on Centre Street, the company rebuilt at the site that remains associated with Yuengling today. According to the brewery, workers hand-dug caves into the hillside to keep beer cool before mechanical refrigeration was available.

The historic Pottsville brewery is located at 5th and Mahantongo streets and remains open for tours. The brewery says the site continues to operate while also serving as a place where visitors can learn about the company’s history and brewing process.

Why Yuengling became part of local identity

Yuengling is bigger than Schuylkill County today, but the company’s identity is still deeply tied to Pottsville. The original brewery, the steep hills around it and the coal-town history surrounding the business connect it to the same industrial landscape that shaped the rest of the county.

In 1976, during the nation’s bicentennial, Pennsylvania recognized D.G. Yuengling & Son as America’s oldest brewery, a distinction the company continues to use today.

From Pottsville to a much larger footprint

As demand grew, Yuengling expanded beyond the historic brewery. The company later added its Mill Creek facility near Pottsville and a brewery in Tampa, Florida. Even with that growth, the Mahantongo Street brewery remains the symbolic center of the brand.

A landmark that still brings people to Schuylkill County

The brewery is also a tourism draw. Visitors come to Pottsville to tour the historic facility, see the hand-dug caves and learn about the generations of the Yuengling family who operated the company.

For locals, though, the brewery means something slightly different. It is one of those places that connects present-day Schuylkill County to its industrial past—a business that grew up in the same coal economy as the towns around it and managed to survive long after many other regional industries disappeared.

Coal, mountains and beer

Schuylkill County’s identity is hard to separate from anthracite, steep ridges, old industrial towns and Yuengling. They are all part of the same regional story.

That is exactly the kind of history Skook PA NewZ plans to keep covering alongside today’s local news.
