Schuylkill County is part of the Appalachian Trail story.
The trail crosses several municipalities in the county, including Port Clinton and townships along Blue Mountain.
Port Clinton is a familiar trail name
Hikers know Port Clinton as one of the small Pennsylvania communities connected to the Appalachian Trail corridor.
Pennsylvania’s rocky reputation
The Pennsylvania section of the Appalachian Trail is famous—or infamous—for rocky footing. That terrain fits right into the ridges and mountain geography of southeastern Schuylkill County.
A different kind of visitor
Long-distance hikers bring a very different kind of outdoor tourism than ATV riders or lake visitors, but all of it reinforces the same point: Schuylkill County is an outdoor county as much as it is a coal county.
